I met one of my idols last Saturday. I won’t say who exactly because she is a very famous writer who has chosen to live a very private life (and no, it’s not Harper Lee-but you’re thinking along the right track).
During our very brief conversation I mentioned how difficult it can be to evolve as a writer and yet continue to turn out the types of books your readers expect.
Her answer: forget them. Just write the book you want to write and forget about anyone and everyone else.
Wow.
I know some people may think that's easy to say once you’re a household name. But maybe that’s the way you become a household name.
It’s no secret that I really struggled when writing Learning to Play Gin, the soon-to-be released sequel to Cheating at Solitaire. I kept trying to recreate Solitaire, to give the reader the same voice, the same tone, the same reading experience.
But I finally reached a point last fall where I realized that Julia was a different person at the start of Gin than she was at the start of Solitaire. I tossed aside everything I thought the book needed to be and returned, as I like to say, to the center of the story.
The risk this takes is that people who loved Solitaire will hate Gin and vice versa. From a marketing standpoint it may be a nightmare, but it’s what the book HAD to be, and after reading it this weekend I felt satisfied that I had indeed found the center of the story.
And that’s all a writer can hope to do.
As I work on the second of what I hope to be several Gallagher Girls stories, this point is even more real to me.
The girls are growing up, getting better at their craft, and the stakes are getting higher. For a few weeks I’m going to turn off my mind, my phone, and maybe even my email and listen to nothing but their voices.
And as much as I want to write a sequel that fans will love I know that doesn’t happen by listening to the fans, but rather by listening to the characters.
My little girls are growing up.
Now I've got to let them.

ps...has anyone heard the new Dixie Chicks CD? Talk about evolving as artists. Love them!

Have you seen their video for "Not Ready to Make Nice"? It is some pretty strong stuff, have to give them credit.
OK, I normally hate it when people make comments on blogs that have nothing to do with the post, but I have to break my own rule to tell you that I was at B&N today to get books (got 5 and my parents nearly got a heart attack, especially when they saw that 3/5 are about vampires, and another one is gothic tales that are bound to give my fragile mind nightmares) and there, on the new release table, which actually houses old releases too (think 3 years old), were not one but TWO piles of Love You, Kill You books. And there were MORE on the shelf.
I nearly screamed with joy for you and was like, "I gotta tell Ally." And since I didn't feel like writing you an email, here I am, breaking my own rule and using way too many commas. Hehe.
So there's my interesting news of the day. Yeah. Bye.
Kinz,
Feel free to comment with that kind of news ANY time! I can't believe it's still on tables after all this time! Whoo hoo!

I LOVE the new Dixie Chicks! Really like how they experimented so much with this album.
As to writing...I'm not doing a sequel, but I'm definitely having trouble dealing with how I'd like to write versus how all the rule-makers suggest I do. Many, many, many revisions...
Sounds like some good advice. I'm glad the two of you got to talk.
Great points, Ally. In the end we're only competing with ourselves when it comes to sequels.
As I struggle over minor issues with TWISTED, I realize that I need one of those days you were talking about - peace and quiet to hear the voices of my characters.
Let them tell me where they are in their lives.
Nice that others are also on this journey.
Ally, more authors have lost me because the follow-up books HAVEN'T changed than the other way around.
If readers wanted the same experience, they'd re-read the first book.
Every time I open a book, I have the excitement of new discovery. Your growth, and your characters' growth, will give me that. Speed 2 won't. (If you know what I mean :)
Also...love the Dixie Chicks new album, and also love that it has done so well
