Funny Lies
I got a case of “the panics” this morning—you know the feeling. (Or maybe you don’t.) But I was just blow-drying my hair and I realized that last year at this time I had three books to finish. Now I’m almost project-less.
What am I going to write next?
It’s a question you can’t dodge. It follows you everywhere. Everyone wants to know.
Do I have ideas? Oodles of them. But soon I will have to decide which—if any—of them are good enough.
This is not an easy thing!
And it’s harder now than ever before because I’ve been to the promised land (a.ka.
So that’s my new bar, and boy is it a high one.
There are people who go their whole lives without coming up with one option-worthy idea. Who am I to think I deserve two?
Still, a girl’s gotta try.
So what makes a great romantic comedy, I had to ask, and as always I came up with the same answer: a lie.
When I think of my favorite romantic comedy movies of all time they almost all have a lie at their center.
--Overboard: Rich woman falls off yacht, gets amnesia, and a small-town handyman tells her she’s his wife in order to get money she owes him back via free housekeeping and babysitting.
--Grosse Point Blank: A hit man in the midst of a personal crisis goes to his high school reunion in hopes of rekindling an old flame who thinks he’s joking when he tells her what he does (note: this is the thing I like best about this movie—it’s a lie without a lie! Brilliant!)
--IQ: an ordinary mechanic falls for Albert Einstein’s genius niece and tries to win her heart by pretending (with Albert’s help) to be a genius himself.
--Working Girl: Secretary pretends to be an executive to get ahead in business.
--While You Were Sleeping: a woman without any family pretends to be the fiancé of a man in a comma, but ends up falling for the man’s brother.
That’s just the start of my list.
What about you?
-Ally
edit: Oh my gosh! How could I have forgotten the greatest lie-based romantic comedy ever????
CAN'T BUY ME LOVE! High school nerd (who eventually grows up to be a 'McDreamy' doctor) pays the most popular girl in school to be his girlfriend so that he can become "in" by association. A classic!

Aw. It's kind of sad. Although lies are often far more interesting, the truth may set us free!
Anyway, you're a busy busy girl, even without three books to write. I'm looking forward to whatever you have left to tell us.
Catch Me if YOu Can. The whole thing is about lies.
The Sting. The best con movie ever!
Some of my favorite romantic comedies are really old. Like 1930s & 40s old. :)
Bringing Up Baby (no lies in that I can recall offhand, though)
Christmas in Connecticut (magazine writer pretends to have a husband, baby and farm in Connecticut when she's really a single woman who lives in a Manhattan apartment)
Ball of Fire (a nightclub singer hides out with a bunch of scientists under the guise of helping one with his slang dictionary, but she's really just waiting to run away with her gangster boyfriend)
10 Things I Hate about You - Heath Ledger's character is being paid to date Julia Stiles' character, and of course he doesn't tell her that.
Moulin Rouge - Satine and Christian can't tell other people that they're in love, and she keeps misleading the Duke so he'll pour money into their production. Also, the doctors and the owner of the M.L. don't tell Satine she has consumption.
Feel grateful. You don't know what to write after three books. Some don't know what to write at all.
I'm sure you'll come up with something. You're a brillant writer.
Lies...what of course. It's what creates the drama, but is always done with good intentions, so we still manage to like and relate to our lying characters that much more.
Just to add a few to the already spectalular list:
Pretty in Pink: lies about where she lives to fit in and get the guy.
Sweet Home Alabama: lies about being married to the current fiance, but then's end up falling back in love with the one she's already married to.
Chasing Liberty: Secret service guy working undercover lies to Mandy Moore (the President's Daughter) about who he is.
The Princess Diaries: Everyone lies to Mia about the fact that she's...well...a Princess.
Ummm...Ally I could keep going, but I think I'll leave it at this.
Oh...and pretty much any romance story where they lie to themselves about who they REALLY like! Which seems to be all of them.
Best wishes on the new book ideas!!! You do have alot to live up too, but I have faith in you as do most of your readers I'm sure.
I JUSt saw a book I knew you would be interested in! "How I Write" by Janet Evanovich. It comes out next month. I almost shorted out my keyboard from drooling when I saw it.
Mean Girls: LL pretends to be a plastic to bring them down...and get her man! So she lies, but soon she isn't lying anymore...there are a trillion teen movies that are lie based!
A new one...
Failure to Launch She makes a business out of getting men to move out of their parents houses. She never reveals that his parents hired her, just lets him believe their meeting was a coincidence.
Wow, someone else who thinks IQ is a movie. That's rare! I'm also another fan of While You Were Sleeping. Can't get better than that!
