If you've ever said, "someday I'd like to write a book"...

Hi Everyone!

First, let me thank all of you who wrote with stellar purse suggestions! I will be sure and keep you updated on my purse-shopping progress. Right now I'm kind of liking this one from Dooney and Bourke (thanks to the suggestion by the lovely and talented Jana Deleon.

Only I'd get it in black.

What do you think?

The second thing I'd like to say is GO POKES!. That's right, my OSU Cowboys won a big one Saturday against the very classy and talented Nebraska Cornhuskers.

A few years ago a couple of friends and I went to Lincoln to the OSU-Nebraska game, and we agreed that we've never been treated so well. Every Husker fan we saw said hello and welcomed us to Lincoln and wished us a safe trip home. This from a program that has an unprecidented tradition of powerhousedom (not a word--but should be.)

It just goes to show that people who are comfortable in their own skin and confident in their own abilities don't need to prove it by being jerks to other people--a fact that I think is true of every athletic venue, workplace, and high school in America.

Okay, and now for the real reason I sat down to write this post...

NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH!

I've been hearing about NaNoWriMo for more than a year, and while I wish I knew tons about it so that I could talk about its origins and whatnot, I'm afraid I don't. And can't.

But here are the things I do know:

--It's happening November 1- November 30

--There is a website that lays out all the details

--You have one month to write an entire novel from scratch.

--In that month, you are supposed to follow my personal mantra of "Don't get it right, get it written," and not worry about typos or wording or anything else that might hang a person up. You're just supposed to put your head down and write!

--If I didn't have a huge rewrite going on I probably would have done it myself.

--Saying "Someday I'd like to write a book" isn't the same thing as writing one. If you want to write--write! And this might be a very good way to start.

--There may very well be a NaNoWriMo group already formed in your community that you can join. I know there's a group made up of patrons and staff of my local library, so check it out!

Okay, happy writing and reading, and purse shopping everyone!

Have a great day!

Ally

ooooh, pretty, pretty. And it would look fantastic in black - but I really like that tan too. Darn it, now I'm thinking I need a new bag too.

I have a book due April 1st. Haven't started except for proposal and keep thinking of doing NaNo. Guess I need to decide quickly and sign up. It might be a good idea given that I really need my rough draft done by end of year in order to get cp's and such to look at it. (sigh) Too many book ideas, not enough time.

I like the purse! Simple yet classy.

Thanks for the Nanowrimo plug. The more the merrier. I completed Nano last year (you have to write 50,000+ words to "win" in the month of November.) It was the first thing I had ever written that was for pleasure instead of for college. I figured it was a perfect time to try it and I've been writing ever since.

Last year I tried my hand at a mystery/thriller. It's still sitting in my drawer not complete but over 50,000 words. I'm just about to complete a cozy mystery novel and I have Nano to thank for getting me started in following my dream of writing.

Right now I'm gearing up for this year's challenge. I'm trying my hand at Young Adult (thanks Ally for the YA reading suggestions when I wrote you a few weeks ago.) I can't wait for it to begin!

Another rule of Nano is you can't start on your story until midnight of the 1st. Not even a word (except for outlines, character development, etc.) It makes it all the more challenging!

As far as local groups, there are events corresponding to your locale. My group just had a kick off potluck party this weekend at a local library. Throughout the month, there are write-offs, word wars, etc. It's great fun to hang out with local writers!

Thanks again for spreading the word Ally!

I like the tan, too, Jana, but I think it would probably take less than an hour for me to drop a purple magic marker on it. Or picante sauce. Or a mascara wand...

Tami and Jana, good luck to you both on NaNoWriMo! I would like to do it, but alas, rewriting doesn't count!

I'd count rewriting - heck, it's work! And technically, I'll be cheating too as I already have the first three chapters done from the proposal. But since I haven't really looked at it since August and 50k words still wouldn't have me at done, I figure it's all right.

And I hear you on the marker, mascara wand thing. I think something in the universe collides every time I wear something white.

Purse looks cute!!! I agree about having to have black. I bought a white canvas purse last year for some strange reason, and it didn't last very long.

I'm also doing NaNoWriMo this year and I'm looking forward to it.
