Little house on the icy prairie

Well, everyone in my home community spent the day celebrating the end of the Civil War... No. Wait. It's freaking 2007!!!!

But you wouldn't know it because my parents (and all of our friends and relatives for that matter) are without electricity and now...running water.

So my parents are...

Are you sitting down? Are you ready for this?

Getting their water from a spring. And heating the house with a fireplace which, luckily, has an insert so that they can set pots and pans there and do things like fry eggs and boil water...the water from the spring.

All of my life, I've met people from big cities who have (quite seriously) asked me if we had running water in Oklahoma. Now I can officially say no.

But we have springs. And hopefully soon...generators.

ps...this is what a fireplace insert looks like if you don't already know.

This is why we think NE Oklahoma might be in the dark for a while...

You're a trooper, Ally! Think of the stories this will make for future generations (or books!)

Hope y'all continue to do fine-- and don't get sick of fried eggs.

Actually, where my house is we got sleet and not freezing rain, so other than having a yard that looks like it's had a zamboni driven over it, I'm doing really well. Power. Water. The works. It's my folks who are roughing it. It's amazing what a difference two degrees makes.

OK - so I know you are all without electricity and all that but you have it and if you have actually taken the padlock off the tv - how 'bout that triple overtime win?? Pretty great game.

GO POKES!

I turned it on to see the score--little did I know I was going to get sucked into all three overtimes!

I heart Mario Boggin.

It sounds like your parents are coping quite well with the weather. I'd be a basketcase, though. :)

And those folks who think anyone living outside a big city has no modern conveniences just make me laugh & laugh. I had a friend who lived in Tucson and his own mother was convinced they had nothing but dirt roads and had to beat rattlesnakes away from their front door (they lived on the third floor of an apartment building *g*).

So funny that you say "Little House on The Icy Prairie" because that is exactly what my mom said Saturday. Yes, the prairie looks like a war zone ... it's terrible ... I had to come back to school Monday night - I almost cried because I had to leave everyone there. They think it could be a month before they get electricity back ... and they are predicting lots of snow this weekend. Stay Warm!!

I'm in NE Oklahoma, too but luckily our little town has kept it's power! After 7 Days out of school it gets a little boring! But the Gallagher Girls have kept me entertained! Thanks so much! I cannot wait for book two! Good luck and stay warm!

The picture you provided is inaccurate. The power lines do look like that, but in all reality the utility trucks are not present on the prairie! They're having a hard time getting out here. But, I know they are working as hard as they can without dying of exhaustion or hypothermia. Generators are a wonderful thing though.
