Deadline Girl rides again

It's crunch time. Seriously. I mean it.

Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy will go into copyedits next week (for those of you who may not know, copyedits are when an editor with very keen eyes and excellent grammar reads your manuscript and sends it back to you with about a billion little red marks on it.) Copyedits are the light at the end of the tunnel.

But Deadline Girl is starting to feel her powers drain. She's like Superman when he hasn't had enough sunlight or...well...some other superhero or heroine when they've been too long without the source of their power.

So I'm doing something bold.

I'm doing something drastic.

I'm posting here--for the first time anywhere--the opening paragraphs of Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy even though it isn't necessarily *final* and might change between now and September 25.

Still, Deadline Girl needs power and she draws her power from readers and this is the best way she knows to blatently beg for positive feedback and fire up her energy reserves once more.

So, I give you...

CROSS MY HEART AND HOPE TO SPY

“Just be yourself,” my mother said, as if that was easy. Which it isn’t. Ever. Especially not when you’re fifteen and don’t know what language you’re going to have to speak at lunch or what name you’ll have to use the next time you do a “project” for extra credit. Not when your nickname is “the Chameleon.”

Not when you go to a school for spies.

Of course, if you’re reading this, you probably have at least a Level Four clearance and know all about the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women—that it isn’t really a boarding school for privileged girls, and that, despite our gorgeous mansion and manicured grounds, we’re not snobs. We’re spies. But at that moment even my mother…even my headmistress… seemed to have forgotten that when you’ve spent your whole life learning fourteen different languages and how to completely alter your appearance using nail clippers and shoe polish then being yourself gets a little harder--that we Gallagher Girls are far better at being someone else.

(And we’ve got the fake IDs to prove it.)

Ally,

Now I want to read the book even more then I did before. This made my Mardi Gras. In case you didn't know, today is Mardi Gras so all South Louisianans are out partying, except for me, because I am sick. Instead, I am here, telling you that the opening paragraphs are wonderful and I can't wait to read the book. Go Deadline Girl!

UGGG! I couldn’t even wait for Cross My Heart to come out BEFORE I read the (totally brilliant/ awesome) opening! Mannnn, now that I’ve read them, I’m just gonna have to camp outside of a Barnes and Noble until the book comes out or something; because the ability to wait (especially for incredible sequels) is sooooo not a power I possess. lol. Thanks for letting us read the opening paragraphs!!! They completely ROCK!

Having to wait what seems like 20 times as long till i get to read the rest of the book.

(its like stopping mid-chapter.)

i like it!

but i have 1 question that i'd like you to consider. now, i'm not sure because i don't have lyky with me, but didn't it say in the beginning that she would be turning 16 soon? And doesn't this book that place soon after the first book? the paragraph says she's 15 still.

like i said, i might have my facts wrong, but w/e.

looks good so far though!!!!

Allow me to explain about Cammie's birthday and Point of View for LYKY.

With both of the books, I imagine Cammie writing them--the summary of what happened--after it happened. So, for LYKY, it's the story about her fall semester, but I think she wrote it while she was in Nebraska for winter break. So when she says "I'll turn 16 next month) she's actually talking about turning 16 during late January.

CMH picks up on the first day back after winter break--approximately 3 weeks after LYKY ended. (I imagine that because of the nature of the school the girls would get a slightly longer break because they don't see their parents often and they frequently have to travel to the other side of the world to do so.)

hope that helps,
ALly

Hey,
Zoinks, that's a snazzy opening paragraph. I can't wait to find out what Cammie's being told to be herself for. I wish you all of luck on the final and tedious stage of your editing process and I'm sure you won't dissapoint all us fans with whatever you've got for Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy. This opening paragraph makes me feel a whole lot better that I'm illegally using my sister's laptop while she's not home 'cause my regular home computer is currently down. I'm hopping that my dad comes home soon with the one I'm getting for my room. . .

Anyway, best of luck and have an awesome day. No, why don't we make it a month. They last longer.

Cheers.
