The funniest (and truest) thing ever!

Two of my favorite personalities in the YA world got together to make this awesome video!

Please take a second to check out Libba Bray and Maureen Johnson talking about Libba's new book and, more importantly to me, the utter ugliness that is the process of writing a novel. A real--people- are-paying -me-for-this- and-counting-on-it- and-I-just-know- my-editor-will-get-fired -if-it-sucks-and-my-life-will-be-over novel.

It's ugly.

I think that's why I STILL think you guys are lying to me when you tell me that you like Cross My Heart.

The truth is I don't like Cross My Heart.

Because Cross My Heart almost killed me.

There was crying.

And eating.

And gnashing of teeth.

And forty-five minutes one day when I sat on my deck in 20 degree weather rather than coming inside because I knew coming inside meant going back to work and I literally did not have the strength to go back to work.

And then one day I called my writer buddy Jen and asked if she'd read it and give me her HONEST opinion because I was pretty sure I was going to have to give Hyperion their money back.

And move to Alaska.

And change my name.

And never, ever write again.

But Jen told me she liked it better than book 1 and that's probably the only reason I was able to finish.

Sure, I thought she was lying.

But I finished.

So thanks, Jen. And thanks to all of you who have said such nice things and made me excited to get to work on book 3.

So...watch Libba and Maureen and go buy their books. And then buy Jen's new books as soon as they come out (I'll tell you more about them then.)

And have a great night!

first off, let me assure you that cross my heart is an awesomely amazing book, and can't fathom why you don't like it, tho i am sorry it caused you so much pain. and your right-that clip was a lot of fun to watch. (you should put more video stuff up) so thx for posting it. (i love libba bray).
hope book 3 isn't as painful to write (i would highly appreciate another clue, because quite frankly the last one didn't satisfy me)

That video was hillarious!!! Simply Amazing. And I liked how they talked about the really hard parts of writing, the breakdowns and tears. And then, they balanced that out nicely with Enchanted Unicorn Band-aids, lol. Great Post!!!

ally!! don't say that!! despite how much you might absolutely abhor your book...we truly do love it. no lies at all. no joke, you can even ask my mom, i was sitting on that couch the whole night after i got it grinning like an idiot. i'm so serious. i couldn't stop smiling and i kept squeaking...*looks around* lots of eeps from this one.

so i suggest you just take one single day and let yourself enjoy what you've written. try to see your books like WE see them. and then you can feel free to go back and hate them all over again. but just remember, we'll always love them!! ^__^

You YA authors are all very connected, aren't you?? I saw this on Libba Bray's blog first, and then E. Lockhart's, and now yours. It's probably only a matter of time before it shows up on Scott WEsterfeld's blog. I don't check Maureen Blog's regularly, but I'm sure it's posted on hers to. I've only read 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen, wait, that's really not true. I've read Devilish too and loved them both. I have all of Libba Bray's. I went out and got The Sweet Far Thing the day after Christmas with my BAM gift cards. lol.

I can't give my opinion on Cross my Heart because I still haven't got a chance or enough extra money to but it, and no libraries have it yet, but I'm sure it was good.

Are you joking! Cross My Heart was like tTWICE as good as I'd tell you I love you! (not to say that the first isn't good, because it rocks.) It was pure amazing! So don't say otherwise.......because you're wrong!

wait one moment... didn't i hear that BOTH...not one, but BOTH...of your books are on some amazing list?...something like NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERS?????!!??

...yeahh....i think i did(:

...so how could you possibly think that we were lying to you, when you're on the list to prove it!

**By the way, i've never posted one of these comments, so while i'm here, i wanted to say something:

i wanted to thank you for all that you do...i can't even imagine how much you have to go through to get these books written, but you go through it anywayy.
you work so incredibly hard, to make sure we're happy, and you do a PHENOMINAL job.
i wanted to tell you that i look up to writers like you, because you are SO blessed with such an amazing talent.
thank you so much for all that you do...
i just wanted to tell you that i appreciate everything you do, and remind you that you are so blessed. thank you for using your gift to make us beyond happy.

...i guess that's all i wanted to sayy...i couldn't exactly put it into the right words, but that's the best i could do...
...after all, i'm not exactly the writer you are, and can trade feelings in for words...

...i don't know if you can do this or not, but i just thought i'd throw this in here:
Which boy do you, personally, like better: Josh or Zach?
...i thought it might make for a good debate(:

personally, i love all of your books. i've read all of them except learning to play gin which i'm planning to read the second I can get a copy of it. but I guess it's true what they say about the whole "your biggest critic is yourself" thing, because i don't think that that book was bad at all. i loved it actually. I mean I was kind of sad when Josh was gone and all of the sudden there was this new guy, but I grew to like him, and I think it was a lot more realistic then the the disney princess movies where they meet a guy, fall in love in like 2 seconds, and then live happily ever after with that same guy (although i still love those movies, haha). but yeah I guess that's about it. Can't wait for the next chapter.

hi ally, dead truth i think both books were EXCELLENT i loved reading them so much i got in trouble in class because i wasnt doing my work i was readig an off-the-subject book. the news about the movie i cant wait evan if it takes years. the actor will be doing what most girls would love to do, play a GALLAGHER GIRL. i wish that The Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women was a real school that taught you how to be a spy and that i was cammie. yes i love the books that much. Anyways thank you for writing books like these and if your having doubts about your writing then you should see alll the girls reading your books and wishing that it was real

love,

I really did think that movie was hilarious! I loved it! Libba totally reminded me of my cousin! Second of all, I'll have you know I'm very picky about the books I read, and though I do love reading very rarley do I find a book I love. and I LOVE your books! I promise I'm not lying! I did think the second book was better than the first book though. not saying the first one was bad just something about the second one... Anyway I'm sorry it was hard for you but even if your book had turned out not so great and you did have to move to Alaska I would have been very dissapointed that you didn't write a third one! lol

I hope that you like Cross My Heart better the further away from the writing process you get--because it's a pretty darn strong novel! It's a much different novel from the first one, while still having the same spirit that I so enjoyed, and I think that's a good thing. :) I'm looking forward to more.

i just wanted to let you know that

number one: you're an AWESOME writer

number two: your books are AMAZING
its because of the complex/simplistic ideas you have blended together witch make the books so exceptionally...just...really really good

number three:i loved the 2nd book and i hope that writing the 3rd and 4th won't be too painful in the process.

i wanted to say that i liked the 2nd book better because of zach. i must say, i like zach a lot in the 2nd book. i really wish he comes back in the third. and i mean reaaaaaaaally wish.

keep up all your great work and your fans will always love your books :]
