George Clooney and I talk about the pub date

I've been too busy to talk to my (fictional) boyfriend, George Clooney, lately, so imagine how happy I was when I got an (imaginary) call from him a while ago.

GC: Hey, you.

Me: Hey yourself.

GC: So now I have to hear about publication dates by reading your blog? I have to say...I'm not feeling very important.

Me: I'm sorry. It's been pretty crazy trying to finish the book.

GC: So what exactly does take so long about finishing books?

Me: George, don't you remember when I blogged about this? I thought I'd explained everything then but I guess you forgot.

GC: Yeah, I guess you have covered this before.

Me: Yes, I have.

GC: But why is it taking so much longer for GG3 than for other books?

Me: Actually, the hardback of LYKY came out a year and a half before the hardback of CMH. That's approximately how long it will take for GG3.

And most authors don't do more than a book a year. Sure, there are exceptions (Meg Cabot makes us all look like slackers), but a lot of really amazing authors do a book every two years, so I happen to think that a year and a half isn't too lazy of me.

Plus, let's not forget that I had a non-writing full-time job up until November.

And Cross My Heart was a really, really painful/stressful/terrible experience and I needed to take some time off to decide if I even WANTED to keep writing books.

GC: But some of the commentors said that it didn't even take that long for the Harry Potter books to come out.

Me: Well the commentors were...how do I put this gently? Wrong. Or mistaken. Let's go with mistaken. (Note: the dates on that link represent when the books were published in the United States. The early books were released in the U.K. first so that's why the early books came out more quickly here--they'd already been written and published elsewhere.)

GC: But can't you do something to make it come out faster?

Me: Me? You're the big-time movie star, can't YOU do something? I'm just the person staying up all hours of the night trying to finish the darn thing.

GC: Ally, do you need a nap?

Me: Yes. Yes, I do.

-Ally

Aw it's okay Ally. Take your time. Finish your book when you finish your book (not that you weren't doing this anyway..but still).

It'll just be better after we waited for it.

Meg Cabot books DO come out fast. The harry potter books did take forever(I was counting down the hours, so that might have something to do with my perspective).

Awwww. Poor Ally. You need a nap. We all need a nap. But of course our looong nap would almost come true because of our SUMMER VACATION!! But don't worry Ally you'll get a nap sooner or later. Don't stress out to much. Or else... George would worry to much.

Ally, you will never exceed the amount of time it took J.K. Rowling to come out with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Ever. I think she set a record...so don't feel guilty at all! If we could survive that, we can survive this...I think. ☺

George just has so, so much to learn. When I get a fictional boyfriend, he'll be more understanding about these things.

In other news, I have a secret mission for you, should you choose to accept it. It involves science. Will email with details soon!

Your books don't take anywhere close to the time between the HP books, toward the end. Hope you enjoy your nap.

might i recommend that you go to a store (i would go to walmart but you may like target or kmart) go to the pillow department and buy a huge, fluffy, fat pillow; take the pillow home, march to the bed/couch, put said pillow on bed/couch, lay down and just take a nap for as long as you need.
you deserve 100 million naps after this book comes out and you should take advantage of your "flexable" schedule. At the age of 17 i am working 2 jobs and toutering for my school 8 hours a day while also helping the local community baseball/softball league... i wish i could take a nap.. so take advantage of every chance you can to nap and possibly take a bath(those are amazing too).

hope you feel less stressed and pulled in many directions soon

You considered giving up writing? I'm glad you didn't. But I think it would be interesting (for us aspiring authors) to hear more about that - why did you consider giving up and why did you decide to keep going?

By all means Ally, take a nap, we can wait. The more rest you get, the more ideas you have, and the better the book will be!

We all look like jerks now.

We should be grateful there's even going to be a GG3. Take as much time as you need.

(I'll just have to remember to save at least 20 dollars until next year, so i can buy it the day it comes out!)

10:25 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Okay, if i come to terms with the fact that it's going to have to take a year for gg3, will you give us something to look forward to?

Like an excerpt by Christmas, or the title by november????
(work with me here, i need SOMETHING to get me along until 2009!)

Ps. It'll be the summer between my Sophomore and Junior year when it comes out, isn't that crazy??

PPS. I just read on yahoo that George Clooney broke up with that girlfriend-of-a-year of his...

hmmm... suspicious... could it have something to do with a certain secret relationship he has with a magnificent writer we know??? (j/k)

Okeydokey...
Think about it this way (this is mostly to other "Gallagher Girls" than to ally, but that's okay...). The harry potter books took ten years for seven books... and there were seven years of planning beforehand, so technically that's seventeen years.
But LYKY, CMH, and GG3 are three books in three years, with a few months of planning. that's an improvement. major improvement.
so yay ally!

Take a nap. Or better yet, get enough sleep at night so that you don't need to! Just nap, nap, and then keep writing. But don't nap so much that you can't sleep at night, there is nothing worse than that.

p.s. wghoops21, i totally agree with you on the needing the nap thing. i've gotten like 7 hours of sleep for like the last 2 months!! (but of course you already know that from math) ☺

anywho, i was serious about the pampering. maybe it'll give you superhuman powers that allow you to go really fast yet accurately and help you finish gg3 all that faster. tho, i know the date won't change, it'd still be cool to know someone with superpowers...
