Decisons are the worst

Who remembers that line in Clueless where Cher is looking at her (revolving) closet for something to wear and she says, "Decisions are the worst"?

Anyone? Anyone?

Well, I do.

And it pretty much sums up my life.

You see, I am the worst decision-maker. Ever.

Now this doesn't apply to big decisions. I recently decided to buy a house in about twenty seconds. The decision about what color to paint the living room of said house?

Well, that one has been going on for about to six weeks.

Not only that, but should I HIRE it painted? Should I do it myself? Should I hire someone to paint the living room (where the heavy entertainment armoire will have to be moved) or should I just hire movers to come move the armoire and then paint it myself?

And curtains?!? I'm going to need new curtains!

And my couch! I've made three separate furniture decisions in my life and two of them were bad so now I REALLY want to get rid of the world's most uncomfortable couch and chair, but then what?

I had a sectional in my apartment in college and I loved, loved, loved it, but I just don't know if that would fit in the room I have now.

And my bedroom furniture is old and dated and not all that jazzy, but have you seen all the beds there are now?

Do I do a wooden headboard? Or the cool old-looking metal ones? Upholstery?

AND SHOULD THE UPHOLSTERY MATCH THE CURTAINS I CAN'T PICK OUT!

Crud.

I'm not exaggerating at all when I say that this is a source of some serious stress in my life right now. On the one hand, I wouldn't mind paying for a little assistance in making these decisions. On the other, I have opinions and I want a house that represents my likes and preferences and not someone else's.

I do know that I really, really like this dresser.

Although I had initially had something darker in mind.

And this is the bed that goes with it...

And I think it is really, really pretty.

But seriously... do you really think I'm going to clean under the bed? I'm a dust-ruffle person for a reason, people! I have dust under my bed. And probably a few random socks. And books. And maybe a half dozen dried out pens and highlighters.

I know that really cool, hip, fashionable people don't buy all the furniture from the same collection. But let's face it, I'm not nearly cool enough for that.

And don't even get me started on the dining room situation.

There's this table I really like at Pottery Barn.

But I'm not in love with the chairs. And, ideally, it would extend slightly farther than this one (even though my current dining room probably isn't big enough for it to extend too far).

But then maybe I'd need a bigger dining room.

But that would require a different house.

Double crud.

So maybe those "twenty-second decisions" aren't any better than no decisions.

Good luck picking out furniture. Most of my furniture I was given from other family members. I only have had to buy bookshelves and a sofa. I'll have to get a new sofa in the next year or so, but I'm holding off until I find just the right one.

Wow, sounds tough. If I were you, I would pick out whichever element matters most to you (furniture, curtains, or paint) then choose the other 2 to match it.
If you have the time, I would paint it myself, and if you know any big, strong guys I would have them move the armoire for me.
By the way, I really like the dresser and bed you picked out. They are very nice. Good Luck!

Go Ally Carter! I am the worst decision maker too. I like that bed, but the blankets are kind of ugly. Couldn't you get new ones? Sorry I haven't checked the 'site in the while, I am so excited for the next book. Are you ever going to release it? I think you should give Cammy a chance to repay her awesome friends. You can't exactly sell your house with the bad econimy, remodel today!

That WAS such a great sectional - you could spend all day hanging out there or load it up with lots of friends on Thursday night for Friends/Seinfeld/ER watching. I so loved it too!
I vote for finding a little professional help to narrow down the choices & you still get the final word to make it more you. Let them do their job so you can do yours..
happy sunday!

Yup, I here picking your own strong guys help. Stron, cute guys to be exact, to move your furniture. About the dust ruffle whatever it is, just get the big container things that the people on tv are saying that are so cool. Just snuggle your stuff in the box and shove it under your bed! But its not very classy. never mind. sry. Good luck.

I luv the pics of the furniture. As for painting...if u like to paint, then hire someone to move the furniture. But if u dont like painting, then hire someone to do both. and if the furniture is comfortable and u dont know if u want to get rid of it, try putting it in a different room, get rid of the furniture in that room, then get furniture for the room that the comfy furniture was in...if u follow that. And for the color of paint....try a neutral color, so that if u want to change it in a few years, itll be easy. CURTAINS!!!!! ok.... find curtains u like, that match anything u could put in the room.
Hope this helps, and good luck!!! :)

Ok. so a super duper easy way to pick out furniture is to eliminate the stuff you hate or dislike or even like! you have to absolutely LOVE it! (this is the same process i use for buying shoes!! i have over 30 pairs to my mothers dismay!) Pick a color scheme and STICK TO IT! no changing your mind afterwords. i suggest the ikea catalog! you can never go wrong woth that!! :) goodluck!

If I may suggest...make or have someone make a wooden rectangular "box" (except with no top or bottom) and stain it to match the bed (or paint it to match the carpet?). Then put it under the bed. Make it large enough to prevent anything from sliding under the bed. Voila! pretty bed, no cleaning under it!

Ok, just a tip for the whole curtain-matching-bed thing: Pick a color from the bed and see if you can find curtains that match that color. Maybe you should watch some HGTV too. Also, if you don't like the chairs, see if that set comes with any different style chairs or they come seperately so you can pick different chairs. Good luck!

The trouble with furniture shopping is that it's the hardest kind of product to "window shop" for online. So you wind up driving from store to store all over town, and by then end of it, it's hard to remember what you liked best and what store it's at. I think it's a conspiracy. The furniture stores want us to get tired and give up, and buy some horrendously expensive thing we won't like so we'll have to shop again in a couple of years.

Anyway, happy shopping, and I know you'll get a house that looks like you.

I have that dresser! Although, I have a bed with a dust ruffle because it was my grandmother's. I guess I'm a mix and match kind of girl :)

As for the color and the curtains, I'd recommend trying a few strokes of a few different colors you're considering and patches of fabric you might use. Then, do it yourself! Those types of things always make you feel so accomplished when you've finished them!

Good luck!

That sounds really stressful! There are so may things to decide and choose from, but so far I really like the things you posted. As for the living room color, we recently just did ours and I would suggest (assuming it fits the budget of the super popular author!) hiring someone to paint for you, and maybe picking a color that matches a rug you want to use or a warm or neutral color. Finally, who the heck cares if you use furniture from the same collection?!?! At least you know it matches and thats one headache you won't have to deal with!

Good Luck,

hey Ally
Decisions can suck a lot but I completely agree with you! Though I would rather have to make hard decisions then not be able to decide anything for myself. It's like in the book The Giver by Lois Lowry where Jonas lives in a world were there's no colour, no choices, no differences. Everybody does what their told and everything is decided for them, where they will work, where they live, what they eat, who will raise them, when you stop working, and even, sadly, when you die. It was a really good book though and it does show you how different the world would be without choices.

I do remember the part in Clueless when Cher has all those clothes and can't make a decision. Very good movie.

As for painting, I'm sure you can paint your own wall!

PS. Those are some really nice pieces of furniture!

Awww, poor Ally.

About the paint: Do what my parents did. Decide what furniture you like, then pick the color that matches the furniture.

About your furniture pictures: Love it! And, who cares what's under your bed. It's your bed!

Good luck. :)

I know what you mean about decisions. Lucky for me my mom was an interior designer and she always knows what to do about furniture and painting. Here are my suggestions: Hire a painter! Painting your own rooms sucks, it takes forever, and you could mess up. Also when you're shoping for you're bed and dresser, decide on the color first. Then decide on your curtains and bedding off of the color. After that you'll get a feel for what the room needs, wood, metal, etc. Good luck!

Ally,
The bed and dresser that you picked out are really beautiful! I understand your dust issue though, it could really be a bother. The table is nice too, but you're right- the chairs aren't great.
One day you'll walk into a store and there will be the piece of furniture you've been looking for!
Good luck!

I wish you luck! I hate decisions too. But in terms of the dresser/bed, I'd suggest picking the bed first - finding one you really like and then find a dresser that works with it. Think about it, what's the main piece of furniture in a bedroom? Not to mention, it's the one you have to sleep in....

Wow you really are stressed. You're not alone. I'm getting all new furniture for my room and I can't decide what I want either. I just bought a new bed. It is a cute bed and I love it but sometimes it can get uncomfortable. But it costs $500 so my mom said I better learn to live with it. Just go with what you like. Your pics are cute and I think you should do what you think is best. I would say a lot more but I don't want to take up the whole page lol. Good luck Ally!!=D

i know what you mean, ally. i recently (as in like over a year ago) moved into a new house and my parents took forever getting furniture. for half a year our family room was empty. no joke! we still don't have cofee tables and are working on landscaping. every time we pass a mansion we joke that we'd die before we find enough furniture to fill it. hope youre faster then my family!

Hahaha- you've just totally summed me up! I can decide to move house and even move country in the blink of an eye but take me shoe shopping and it gets ridiculous. Apparently, according to some tv show on shopping that I watched, women always worry that there might be something better around the corner, hence the indecision. Yup, that's me!!!

I love all the furniture you thinking of getting but for the table-chairs situation just buy the table and if you still like your old chairs use those and maybe you could get like new cushions or those slip like drape things. Ahh Clueless. Decisions ARE the worst.

You could: get the dresser. go to the same store. find a store-wrker person. give them a swatch of the wood you want. they can give you a whole selection of "dust-ruffled" beds in the chosen color. you could probably get the dresser in a darker color anywho. most dining room tables come with leafs[leaves] that you can take out to make the table smaller. you aren't in lvoe with the chairs? do the same thing that you would do with the dresser and bed. also, ask for a swatch of the wood of the item. a real piece of the the wood. place it in different palces around your room to see the difference in light and darkness.

hope it helped!
