MORE random observations from the Olympics

1. I now really, really want to go to London in 2012. Or maybe Vancouver for the winter games! I know I never will, but it's something I can talk about in vain and google for a while.

2. Why is it that every four years ordinary people become experts on things they only see every four years? I know I don't actually know anything about the gymnastics, for example, but that doesn't keep me from commenting (very loudly. and to no one.) on whether or not someone actually "stuck" their landing.

3. If those little Chinese gymnasts are all 16 I will eat my socks.

4. I still really like Michael Phelps--he seems like a very hard working and admirable young man. But I can't help but feel a little sorry for all the other swimmers because...come on...they're swimming hard too.

5. How did people watch the Olympics before TiVo? Seriously? I'm asking.

6. Is it just me, or does Bob Costas get a little loopy after a while?

7. The medal ceremonies make me cry now, too. Even when it's for a country other than my own. If you ask me, it's just really hard to give up on world peace when watching a medal ceremony.

8. I think someone (maybe Bob Costas when he's loopy) should do a montage or tribute or something to little metal hair clips and their role in gymnastics through the ages.

The U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team celebrates their silver medal.
They also showcase the age-old pairing of gymnastics and little metal clips.

9. My sister and I have decided to boycott beach volleyball because the men get to wear shorts and tank tops and the women have to wear teeny tiny bikinis.

10. To be an Olympic-caliber athlete you must travel...a lot.

The beach volleyball dress requirements piss me off, majorly. Cheers to you and your sis for boycotting.

And re: Chinese gymnasts...srsly.

Those girls all have passports issued by their government saying they're 16. I'll believe it when I see their birth certificates.

Did you see the diving? Amazing! I can't believe people can do that many flips and still manage to do a perfectly angled dive.

Hey Ally,

Oh my goodness! When the '16' year old girls came out, my whole family was like, "They are NOT 16!!"
I didn't know you had a sister. I do too! She's 16 (ironic!).

oh yeah, i totally agree. those metal barrets do a big part in the olympics for 'women'. and i am with you all the way on the tiny girls. i mean, those girls that say they are sixteen, look younger than me. And i'm not even twelve yet! It's not the size, because a lot of people are petite like that, it's that their faces and the way they're built, like kids my age. i mean, the oldest one is probably actually only like fourteen. seriously, if they are cheating us, how do they sleep at night. but they are good olympians.

Oh Ally, my dad's cousin lives right close by where they are having the Olympics in London. I sure hope i can go see them!
I agree with you about the Tivo part. My schedule has been revolving around Michael Phelps's swims and i'm losing a good deal of sleep.
My dad also thinks he can comment about the synchronized diving. yeah, maybe in about a million years.
Peace!

same here, i used to be a gymnast and i think i've bought about 20 of those large packs of clips for my hair. Also, olympics without tivo? I couldn't imagine that!
also, i totally agree about the beach volleyball uniforms, i mean if i had to play in that I would stand in my room and refuse to go play until I could wear something that descently covered me up. Especially for all the spiking and diving.

LOL! I do the same thing! And no way are all those Chinese girls 16. I might think it was just my perception that all kids look a lot younger than they are (at my advanced age *g*) but our 16 year olds LOOK 16.

okay, I've played beach volleyball competitively, and I can vouch for the teeny tiny bathing suits. I would love to say it's because of vanity, because when you play so much, you're going to have tan lines no matter how much sunblock you use, so the smaller the suit the fewer the terrifying tan lines. Additionally, no matter how much or how little you wear, sand will get EVERYWHERE. I would literally go home and not remove an article of clothing until I got in the shower and then the sand would just DUMP out... I still don't know how I managed to keep the drains clog-free!!

i was watching the news and the guy on there said that to be in the olympics you have to be turning 16 in the year of the olympics. so therfore the girls could be 15 going on 16 but they still look like 12 or younger.

4:13 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I totally agree... with all of that.

I agree that the Chinese girls are younger, the government probably only gave them the passports because they wanted their country to do well.

But is the age limit only for gymnastics? Because they were making a really big deal about this guy in synchronized diving and he's only 14. Hmmm... I'll have to google that.

I wish the olympic coverage was better. I don't have cable right now. All I'm seeing is the same sports and same people over and over again. I know there's more going on than what I see. When I was a kid in the 70's 80's and early 90's olympic coverage was more even. There is questionable stuff going on. The uniforms aren't fair and the ages aren't real.

Truthiness to ALL!
Yep, 16.
That was a whole conversation at the cottage last weekend. Plus those cheerleaders in the itsy-bitsy-er! neon yellow bikinis.

I really hope the next Olympics are in Chicago. Not next as in Winter, next as in the one we are bidding for. The place my mom works has connections with the Mayor of Chicago[i live 45 minutes away from the big city] and we might get tickets to the Olympics. Cool,eh?

And the poofy white hair ties. =] We were watching Girls [I can't bear to call it Womens] Gymnastics and all of the sudden my mom yelled "OUT OF UNIFORM NO POOFY WHITE HAIR TIE" It was funny. But she was right. :)

Hye, yeah the chinese girls are NOT 16!!!! their 14...and a stuck landing is when someone does their dismount (or tumbling pass on floor) and land and do NOT move their feet once they hit the floor. Yeah i dont like what the volleyball players have to wear i swear thats the only reason guys watch that sport.

I asked the same question!! What perverted man decided that just because it's beach volleyball, the girls HAVE to wear swim suits that look one: incredibly uncomfortable and two: have no affect to the out come of their event?!

you know the little metal clips are the best. they hold your strays, curls in my case, out of your face while doing your flips (the glitter defines your face and makes you confident about the way you look)and the chinese girls seriously Cheng Fei is the only one i know is ld enough

I am so upset that they have taken softball out of the olympicsfor 2012...or for good. The only reason that they took it out was because they said USA won them all...well now they have to excuse because they didn't win this year. I don't know why they thought it was ok to rip girls' dreams away from them, and from where I see it, I think it is just plain wrong. Hopefully the I.O.C. will see the right choice because I want to be in the 2016 Summer Olympics and take home gold.
