The most important Olympic observation yet...and an anniversary

First things first...

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, MOM AND DAD!

That's right. My parents have been married 44 years (I think) today. Yep, you read that right--44 years.

THEY ROCK.

Can we have a round of applause for my parents please? (And, just so you know, they routinely read the comments section of this blog.)

What's the secret to their success, some may ask. Well, I think it's that they never let the romance die.

For example, I asked my mom a day or two ago what they had planned to celebrate the big day and she said, "Oh, we'll probably go out to dinner."

"Where?" I asked.

"I don't know," she said. "Maybe Subway."

Which is probably slightly less exciting than the year he got her the manure spreader. Nothing says true love like a machine that is built to hurl...manure.

Oh, and one time I asked my father what he was going to get Mom for Valentine's Day and he said, "Well, I was thinking about maybe taking her to Wal-Mart and letting her read a card. Heck, I might even let her read two."

(Am I starting to make more sense to you guys now? Because, seriously, this explains A LOT about me.)

So happy anniversary, Mom and Dad. Just don't go too crazy with the celebrating.

And now on to the Olympic moment of the day...

Last night I watched the women's gymnastics all-around finals with bated breath as Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson flew and flipped and forged their way into history. It was a thing of beauty.

And then, during the medals ceremony, I cried. Again.

And not because two American women stood atop the medals stand in this event for the first time ever.

And not because, as happy as I was for Nastia, a part of me couldn't help but feel bad for Shawn because no matter what, they couldn't both come home with gold.

And not because I'm way too old (and fat) to fulfill my Olympic dream of medaling on the beam.

Nope. The reason I cried last night was because as I sat there I remembered something that I've known all along and hope the world never forgets: the power of the teenage girl.

All you have to do is look at the sheer single-mindedness that all of the competitors exhibited for not only that night but for their entire lives to know that this is not a group to be taken lightly.

YA authors frequently get asked when we're going to write for "grown ups" or when we're going to write "real book" or whether or not we want to stretch our muscles by writing for someone other than teenage girls.

To this, I've always shook my head felt a little sorry for people who have never seen the precision with which a teenager can see through a book's mistakes--who have never witnessed the voraciousness with which a teenager can latch on to the things that they value most and the strength with which they will work to meet their goals.

So to the critics of YA fiction I have to say I write books for the Nastia Luikins and Shawn Johnsons of the world... Is there anyone better to write for?

Teens are so very dedicated people. I think because they're old enough to be dedicated but they don't have to worry about insurance and grocery shopping and jobs and stuff like that. And we still have dreams and haven't given up on them and still think that pretty much anything is possible.

We are all around one of the most awesome age groups ever.

(Me? Biased because I am a teen? Never! ;) )

But I write for myself. If I decide to let people read it, then fine, but if no one ever does, I'd write anyway. :-)

And I loved this post; I starred it in my Reader so I can keep reading it.

Congrats to your parents; that's so cute.

And I was so happy with the results. Nastia is an amazing gynmast, so focused and controlled and graceful, and Shawn is just so much fun to watch, she's so energetic. :D

First of all, a round of applause for the 'rents.

Yes, we teens can be slightly obssesive and pay attention to every little detail and such.

I guess we're picky like that.

Congratulations to your parents! A very special and rare couple, and event, in this day and age. Not knowing your background might I assume you're a "farm kid"? There is a familiar ring to your Dad's behavior. Our dad's anniversary gifts ranged from a shop vac to those ever romantic knee high rubber boots used for changing sprinkler lines. And dinner out might mean dining on the deck or taking a picnic to the mountains, after a day in the orchards. Savor such special people...and start planning for their 50th!
As for the Olympics...I do believe there is some type of mind control in play, it is very difficult to push the "off" button! The fingers are willing but the heart is weak...By the way, you just might be a relative (long lost cousin?) of the gold winning fencer from Oregon...although one cannot be sure how adept you are with anything sharper than a butter knife...
Keep up the great work...You are writing for my students. I'm sure that I've purchased so many copies of TLHK to share with kids I've paid for your summer lawn service for life!

congrats Mr. and Mrs. Carter! (or do you have a different last name, like my mom and me do?). i don't get to see the olympics lately, i've been...busy (crying over my cat who is no more). I write for kids, not off my age, or any other age, but for kids with my level of reading and concept. That is who I write for.

Hey Ally (and Mr. and Mrs. Carter!),

What?! You should go somewhere better than Subway! If I could, I would get your reservations to this fancy schmancy club I belong to that has different restaurants in other states. Oh well. Have fun! I'm glad God has blessed you with such a happy marriage!

And as for Nastia and Shawn. They are neck in neck with each other. Congrats to both of them for the almost American sweep!

And as for who do you write for...

I think I write for myself.

Sometimes.

I like to write persuasive essays too. Arguing is fun. :)

congrats 2 ur parents ally. my parent's anniversery is in a week i think, but they haven't been married that long. they're bot even that old! lol.
and yeah, i want to be a writer and i like to look back at the book (read random pages here and there i know its weird, but watev) and lots of times i find mistakes that are like ones i do and i think, YEA! im not the only one that does that, published authors do that too. im proud to say i havent found any in your books.
also, i just wanted to say even though this doesn't have to do with this blog that if you havn't heard Miley Cyrus's "Fly on the Wall" song listen to it, b/c i know people have all sorts of different opinions about her that song is totally awesome and it reminds me alot of the GG books because it sounds all spyish and... i dunno it just totally reminds me of it. So, listen to it and maybe you'll agree and add it to your GG soundtrack list. if not, watev. i tried.

Guess what Ally? I'm a teenage girl writing a novel! I have about 14,000 words so far. Oh and I had never noticed Michael Phelps' pantage issues until you mentioned it. But have you ever been to the mall and seen the huge Hollister posters? The guys on them could rival Michael Phelps in the 2012 olympic sagging competition. Oh and by the way, I'm a gymnast and the deal with those hair clips is... if your hair gets in your eyes in the middle of a routine you have to just leave it there and fall on your face from lack of vision because-get this-they deduct points from your score if you brush hair out of your face or, for that matter, pick your wedgie. So basically if your leotard is halfway up someplace you definitely don't want it to be, you have to present your backside to the world and surgically remove your leotard later. Ow.

Oh yeah and guess what? My coach said there was a 41 year old gymnast that won some level ten competition he was at (there are 10 levels and then junior and senior elite). So maybe you can still fulfill your olympic dream!

My parents are romantic, too! I remember that one year (19th anniversary?) when they went to a yard sale together and bought each other presents. Anyway, happy anniversary, Ally's parents!

I wanted Shawn Johnson to win the gold...though I knew it would be Nastia. Though I have nothing against Nastia, I wanted to see Shawn win. We all have preferences, you know? Whether we mean to or not.

I also made newfound observations about the dynamic between gymnasts and metal clips, thanks to you. Thank you, ye-who-enlightens.

And I totally concede your point about teens. Not like I'm biased or anything because I happen to be between the age of 12 and 20. But it seems like adults always overlook us because we're all "self-centered brats out of sync with reality". Which is...not true. Okay, so it's true about some people, but not everyone.

And as for the comment on writing for teenagers - I couldn't agree with you more. People underestimate us because we're younger - but we can notice plot problems, or character flatness just as well as anyone else.

Congratulations to Ally's parents!!! Even though I've never met you I'm pretty sure you guys make a cute couple. Now, my mom says that all great authors write books only for teens, and that's a shame. I think she's wrong. We totally deserve it!!! Keep writing, Ally! You're great(even my parents think so!)

Happy 44th Anniversary Ally's parents!!!

I think teen books are great because I can relate to it but adult books are good too...to a certain extent. I think writing a YA novel would be funner than writing an adult one because you could be more creative because teens do crazy, wacky, out-there things that adults don't do and you can write about it.=D

P.S- Ally, you're NOT fat!!!

Congratulations to your parents for 'sticking it'! My husband and I are celebrating our 20th anniversary tomorrow!

Thanks for writing for teenagers. As a mom of teenage girls, I love it that there are dedicated writers who care deeply about their audience. I also love to read the books that they recommend for me because they want to talk to me about them.

One of my daughters reads your blog faithfully (HEY BOO BOO!) and one day last winter when she had been home sick for a week, she wrote you an email. You responded that day, thus winning the gold medal in her heart and mine.

Thanks so much for all you do for teens!

I've read that part about writing for us teenagers many, many times, and I get teary-eyed every single time. (Like right now!)
Thank you so much for believing in us and knowing that we are more than just a bunch of rotten kids.
Thank you, Ally.
It's nice to know that someone believes in us.

no,there isn't a better audience than teens! ;) infact adults r more used to not expecting the best out of everything, so its not a big deal if something flukes, but with teens its gotta be perfect (we/i have very high standards) all ur books have been fantabulous and frankly, super awesome.
