The differences between writing for adults and teens

Hey everyone!

Soon I will be leaving Washington D.C. and saying goodbye to the 2009 Romance Writers of America convention. It's been a good year, and I'm glad I came. I'm also especially glad I had the opportunity to present a session with my agent, Kristin Nelson, on the differences between writing for teen and adult audiences.

This is a session that actually grew out of this very blog. About a year ago I wrote a couple of entries about the questions that writers should and should not be asking when considering writing for young adults. In honor of today and how popular this subject seems to be I thought I'd re-link to those original posts.

The Wrong Questions

and

The Questions That Aren't Getting Asked at All

Hope this helps,

Ally

Thanks for the links!

Any awesome questions from the panel?

Here are some hypotheticals:
I've written a novel and my editor thinks it will sell better in YA than adult. Should I rewrite or edit the book?

I have a series of books completely outlined with backstory and subplots. How should I approach an agent or publisher?

Should I be worried about being typecast as a YA author? How do I separate my adult books from my YA books?

What is the difference between a novel for children and a YA novel?

Do you filter your thoughts when writing the draft of a YA novel, or
wait for edits?

And I have to ask, because it is required by law: Where do you get
your ideas?

I just got done reading your good question bad question thing and I think u made really good points. I would also like to say that I'm HAPPY very happy that u write "clean teen" books. Because so many of the YA books out there that sound really good have stuff that I REALLY don't want to read about in them and it's so hard to tell until u start reading the book like a couple weeks ago I got a book from the library and the WHOLE thing was about sex they did NOT say that on the cover and I found it so gross I stopped reading it and yes I'm 14 but that doesn't mean I want 2 read that stuff. That's 1 of the reasons I love you books :) the other reason is because they're incredibly AWESOME lol. so Thanks for writting GOOD books and it would b cool if u could put a list of other authors who write clean books on your blog u rock ally

Hi Ally. I was one of the lucky audience members of your st. louis tour. It was great. You were great.
I asked you for the titles to your super-sneaky-spy book collection, and you told me that you would do a blog post on it. I know you are incredibly bizy and all, and I am anything but impatient. I just thought I'd remind you. Thanks for writing,
Arielle
